Well, alright, so I’m not entirely serious, but nail varnish does have some point beyond making nails look pretty. Many nail varnishes also contain substances that will protect your nails, by stopping them from breaking and making them taste nasty so you don’t bite them. Some even claim to make your nails grow faster.

Nail varnish comes in all sorts of colours, but the most popular by far is red, followed by pink. While some men do occasionally wear nail varnish, it’s mostly a woman thing.

Here’s a quick science lesson: the most important ingredient of modern nail polish is a substance called nitrocellulose. This clever little ingredient is what forms the ‘film’ over the top of the nails, protecting them and making them shiny. The nitrocellulose will be mixed with a few other chemicals (solvents, for example, that make it a liquid that can set) depending on the brand, and then with dyes in various strengths and combinations to give the full range of colours to choose from.

When you buy nail varnish, there are several things you should look for. The one that most people think of straight away is the colour, but be careful of just picking up the first one you see that comes in the colour you want – you might be ignoring its downsides. You should look for an easy applicator bottle that comes with a built-in brush in a good shape, and is quick drying and long lasting.

The more you’re willing to spend, the closer you’ll get to a salon-quality look – and even if you spend a lot, you’re likely to spend less than you would have at an actual nail salon. The silver X will break up your nail tip into three quadrants. If the silver does not show up well, go over the line again. Use the liquid acrylic in a well-ventilated area. You will paint the liquid acrylic on to your nails so that the beds will be smooth without any bumps where the edge of the acrylic nail tips rests on your nail.

You will be dipping the acrylic brush into the liquid acrylic and then into the acrylic powder that will create a ball of thickened acrylic on your brush. Paint the acrylic onto your nail so that you can create a smooth finish for your acrylic nail tips.

Have the acrylic powder container open. Prepare the acrylic brush by dipping the brush into the liquid acrylic and then wiping it on a paper towel to remove excess liquid. Then lightly dip half of the brush into the liquid acrylic and then remove the excess by wiping against the inside of the liquid acrylic bottle.

You are ready to dip the brush tip into the acrylic powder. When you do, you will create a ball of thickened acrylic. It should be damp instead of wet. Paint this thickened acrylic where the acrylic nail tip is on your nail. Work quickly to spread the acrylic onto your nail surface without flattening the acrylic. Wipe the brush on the paper towel to remove any excess acrylic.

Continue working until you have built up the surface to resemble the curve of your own nail bed. Apply a bit at the tip of the nail to create a natural look as necessary. Avoid getting acrylic on your cuticles because mould or fungus could grow under the nail at that spot.

It will take about ten minutes for your nails to dry and set. You can safely use a grit nail file on the sides of the dried and set nails and close to the cuticle bed to shape your nails. Use the filing block to smooth your nails. Remove any acrylic filings and dust by washing with soapy water and using a brush. The exposure to the harsh chemicals requires that you moisturise your nails with nail oil. As your nails grow out, you will need to paint more acrylic on to your nails every two weeks.

The best nail form to use are those that fit your model’s nails properly and securely. Choose nail forms that have a sculpting grid to allow for length consistency from nail to nail. Since your model’s nail beds may not all be the same length, you may want to double check your length consistency when shaping the nail.

Also, choose a form that have tabs that lock together to ensure fit and holds the c-curve in place. Place the center piece of the nail form directly to the underside of the form for firmness and a deeper c-curve.

Red Nail Polish

Nail competitions require you to polish one hand with red cream polish. Why red nail polish? Because it is the most difficult color to polish.

The best red nail polish to use is a true red color. Try to avoid reds that are too orange or too blue. Also, use a red nail polish with a thicker viscosity for better coverage.

Make sure your polish application covers the entire tip, including sides and tip edges! Do not polish the underside.

Adding Your Own Acrylic Nail Tips

Tough economic times have made us all aware that we sometimes take the easy road, when we could just as easily learn to do a few things for ourselves. While it wouldn’t be recommended that you cut your hair at home by yourself: acrylic nail tips can be very easy and quick to do yourself, with a little practice.

Things You’ll Need

*Acrylic tips of your choosing.

*Acrylic Liquid.

*Acrylic Powder.

*Application Brush

*Bonding Glue

*Acetone

*Nail Boards

*Nail Primer (Disinfectant).

Getting Started

1. Place some paper towels on the surface you’ll be using and get some small glasses for the acrylic liquid and acetone.

2. Take the acrylic nail tips out of the package and find one that matches your tips properly. Once you’ve glued them on, you don’t want the tips to extend much farther than your natural tips — otherwise you increase the risk of breakage. Once you’ve found which one is right for you: Line them up in order of which nail will go first, second, third, etc.

3. Next dab a small amount of bonding glue on your own nail (one at a time) and place the acrylic tip on, while holding for a few seconds.

4. Next file and shape each nail to desired shape/length.

5. Mix liquid acrylic and acrylic powder. After that’s done: dip your application brush in the mixture and carefully brush it on each nail. Try to get close to the cuticle without overlapping it. Frequently dip the brush in the acetone, to prevent the brush from hardening.

6. Apply second coat if needed.

7. Once everything is dry, further shape acrylic nail tips if needed and buff them for a smooth finish before applying any polish.

8. Apply polish and enjoy your new nails.
