How to fix toenail that fell off and is growing into skin?

My toenail was stepped on and the nail fell off. Its been about 6 months now and front of my toe is very tender. I think the nail is growing into the skin. It’s not an ingrown toenail on the sides because i had the sides of the nail bed permanently removed.
